Biomedical engineering BME or medical engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes e. BME is also traditionally known as “bioengineering”, but this term has come to also refer to biological engineering. This field seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine , combining the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical biological sciences to advance health care treatment, including diagnosis , monitoring , and therapy. This involves making equipment recommendations, procurement, routine testing and preventive maintenance, a role also known as a Biomedical Equipment Technician BMET or as clinical engineering. Biomedical engineering has recently emerged as its own study, as compared to many other engineering fields. Such an evolution is common as a new field transitions from being an interdisciplinary specialization among already-established fields, to being considered a field in itself. Much of the work in biomedical engineering consists of research and development , spanning a broad array of subfields see below. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data. As an interdisciplinary field of science, bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to analyze and interpret biological data. Bioinformatics is considered both an umbrella term for the body of biological studies that use computer programming as part of their methodology, as well as a reference to specific analysis “pipelines” that are repeatedly used, particularly in the field of genomics.

You also have access to a range of state-of-the-art facilities. These are designed to support practical activities across the subjects covered by this field. This creates an interdisciplinary community that you are very much part of. The first two years are designed to ensure that all students achieve a common breadth and depth of knowledge.
You will also follow a module developing your design skills and professional practice. At the end of the second year you will have a broad knowledge base which will provide a platform for specialisation. The aim of this project was to design a device capable of removing impacted food boluses in pediatric patients both more efficiently and more quickly compared to current industry standards. A suture is currently used to secure the drain to the patient but has multiple shortcomings including infection risk and failure over time. We have worked alongside Dr.
Sara Neimanis to create a new securement device that minimizes infection while durably securing the drain over extended periods of time. The cautery phantom senior design team will engineer and improve a system that will arrest artificial blood flow in response to electrocautery in a tissue phantom manufactured by Simulated Inanimate Models, LLC SIM. To solve this problem, we have investigated methods of vessel constriction by lining the tissue phantom blood vessel wall with a thermoresponsive material, coagulating the artificial blood by introducing proteins and chemicals into the mixture, and by making the blood vessel with a shape memory polymer.
A chair specifically designed to safely and comfortably sit infants and young children that are immobilized by a cast that spans from the mid abdomen to the ankle, all while allowing proper social and cognitive development. The chair incorporates extra space for the casted torso and legs, as well as multiple aspects of adjustability to fit the wide range of children sizes and to fit under tables of varying heights.
There is a need to ensure that drivers are alerted of approaching emergency vehicles so that they can remove themselves from the path of the emergency vehicle. It is especially a challenge for deaf, hard of hearing, and distracted drivers to identify emergency signals, which puts them at an increased risk for collision. In this project, we developed a device for use in the car that detects emergency vehicles and notifies the driver of their presence.
We used a trained convolutional neural network to detect sirens in noisy environments.

Like many electric cars these days you can drive the iX3 in normal situations without having to use the brake pedal. When you lift off the accelerator, the brake energy regeneration system slows the car down for you.
You can select how strong this brake regeneration feels — high, medium or low. Low lets the car coast for longer while high slows it down more quickly. It also has a smart system where the brake energy regeneration can be adapted to the road situation using data from the sat nav and driver assistance system. For example, when approaching a junction or a car on the road ahead, recuperation is fully engaged and the BMW iX3 will slow down for you.
The iX3 has a lower centre of gravity than the standard X3 — some 7. This helps the iX3 feel sportier to drive and should stop your passengers feeling car sick on twisty roads. Adaptive suspension comes as standard and includes electronically controlled dampers. This means you should be able to adjust how the car feels to drive, ranging from comfy to firmer and more sporty.
